Directorate of Professional Practice
The Directorate of Professional Practice at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education is responsible for coordinating and enhancing students’ exposure to real-world teaching and professional environments. It plays a pivotal role in bridging academic theory with practical experience through well-structured teaching practice, internships, and school-based engagements.
The current and Pioneer of this directorate is Dr. Joseph Olusegun Adeagbo a distinguished academic and administrator at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), Oyo, Nigeria. He currently serves as the Director of the Directorate of Professional Practice, overseeing both Teaching Practice and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) programs.
The Directorate of Professional Practice (DPP) at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), Oyo, is the office that handles the "applied" side of teacher education. While other directorates manage classroom theory, the DPP is responsible for ensuring that students can actually perform in a real-world school or industrial environment.
1. Leadership
The current and pioneer Director of Professional Practice is Dr. Joseph Olusegun Adeagbo. He is a seasoned academic professional who specializes in vocational and technical education. His role is to manage the complex logistics of sending thousands of students into the field every year for practical training.
2. Core Responsibilities: Teaching Practice (TP) & SIWES
The Directorate is essentially the "Logistics Hub" for the two most important practical components of an EAUED degree:
-
Teaching Practice (TP) Coordination: Every student-teacher must undergo a mandatory period of classroom teaching in secondary or primary schools. The DPP:
-
Identifies "Cooperating Schools" within and outside Oyo State.
-
Posts students to these schools based on their subject specializations.
-
Organizes "Supervision Teams" of lecturers who travel to these schools to grade the students' performances.
-
-
SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme): For students in non-teaching or technical fields (like Computer Science, Home Economics, or Agricultural Science), the DPP manages their placement in industries, farms, or technical firms to gain hands-on skills.
-
Micro-Teaching Lab: Before students go to actual schools, they must practice in a controlled environment. The DPP oversees the Micro-Teaching Laboratory, where students record their lessons, watch them back, and receive peer critiques.
3. Key Functions
-
Professional Orientation: Before students leave the campus for the field, the DPP organizes the Teaching Practice Orientation Workshop, where students are taught the "Code of Conduct" for teachers, including dressing, ethics, and lesson plan preparation.
-
Logistics & Allowances: The directorate coordinates with the university bursary to manage the logistics of transport and allowances for supervisors and students.
-
Quality Control in the Field: They act as the middleman between the university and the principals of secondary schools. If a student-teacher is misbehaving or if a school is not providing the right learning environment, the DPP intervenes.
-
Logbook Management: The DPP issues and vets the official Practicum Logbooks, which serve as the legal evidence of a student's field experience.
4. Strategic Importance
For a University of Education, "Professional Practice" is the ultimate test. It is the moment where the university’s reputation is visible to the public. By ensuring that student-teachers are well-trained and professional, the DPP protects the prestige of the EAUED degree.
