Directorate of the Yoruba Language Proficiency Programme
The Directorate of the Yoruba Language Proficiency Programme is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and advancing the Yoruba language and culture through structured academic instruction and practical engagement. Housed within Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, the Directorate plays a strategic role in fostering linguistic excellence and cultural pride among students and the wider community.
The current and Pioneer of this directorate is Dr. Cynthia Oniyelu Adekunle a distinguished academic and cultural advocate, renowned for her contributions to Yoruba language education and cultural preservation. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree and serves as the Director of the Yoruba Language Proficiency Programme Directorate at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), Oyo, Nigeria.
The Directorate of the Yoruba Language Proficiency Programme (YLP) at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), Oyo, is a specialized academic and cultural unit. Because the university is located in the heart of Oyo—the historical seat of the Oyo Empire—the YLP Directorate serves as a global hub for the study of "Standard Yoruba."
While the Department of African Languages handles degree-seeking students, this Directorate focuses on practical language mastery for a wider audience.
1. Leadership
The pioneer Director of the Yoruba Language Proficiency Programme is Dr. Cynthia Oniyelu Adekunle. She is an accomplished academic and cultural advocate recognized for her work in language preservation and pedagogical innovation in Yoruba studies.
2. Core Objectives
The YLP is designed to be inclusive, targeting individuals who need to master the language regardless of their academic background. Its primary goals include:
-
Skill Mastery: Focusing on the four domains of language learning: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
-
Standardization: Teaching the "Oyo dialect," which is widely recognized as the standard version of the Yoruba language used in literature and official broadcasts.
-
Cultural Acculturation: Providing a "field experience" for students from other institutions and international scholars to immerse themselves in Yoruba traditions, festivals, and social interactions.
-
Research Hub: Serving as a center for local and international researchers studying African linguistics and sociolinguistics.
3. Key Programmes & Services
-
The 12-Week Intensive Course: An "all-inclusive" training program designed for international students and non-native speakers to gain functional proficiency in a short period.
-
Acculturation Programme: A mandatory or elective immersion for students from other Nigerian universities (often those studying Yoruba or Linguistics) to experience authentic Yoruba culture in Oyo.
-
Tourism & Documentation: The Directorate acts as a focal point for tourists, providing tour guides for historical sites like the Alaafin’s Palace, Old Oyo National Park, and local artifact exhibitions.
-
Instructional Technology: The Directorate utilizes a dedicated Language Laboratory and modern technology to help students perfect their tonality and pronunciation.
4. Strategic Importance
For EAUED, the YLP Directorate is a "soft power" tool. It preserves the richness of the Yoruba oral tradition (including Oriki, Ewi, and Folklore) while ensuring the language remains relevant in a digital, globalized world. It also serves as a major pillar of the university's International Programmes, attracting scholars from the African Diaspora.
